Robin Olds was there when the first P-38's were operational...He was among the first to train with them, and to fly them in combat...He had great stories about them in "Fighter Pilot" including his shooting down of an ME-109 after both of his engines stalled and he was in an unpowered glide...Possibly the only surviving pilot in history who could ever say that......Ben

Yes - the P-38 is one of our classic WWII planes. It was one of the first model planes I built as a child.

The namesake of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II, was in the news today...Like all new machinery, it has had its own teething problems......Ben

I think we are still buying &1000.00 hammers etc. They mentioned the chip for the computer they were using was being replaced with one that is five times faster and cheaper. I've bought Beta chips that were a thousand dollars and years ahead of current tech. blah blah blah etc... A chip is a chip a hammer is a hammer why do we allow any company that has anything to do with defense rip us off to the tune of billions of dollars? We/they have been spitting out these big numbers for so long that we don't even pause at $900,000,000.00 for a plane. That's insane!! maybe if I was crazy and it was someone else's money I could understand that much for the first one because of developement, design, tax, tag and title, but not far shy of a billion dollars a plane and going up after dozens of them, nah.
