No it's damn near the Apocalypse. I mean somehow someway we got to do something about this either by management or just not allowing people to live in certain areas we can't allow developers to build subdivisions that are going to be ravished by fires. This is all ridiculous. I know that sounds weird in that people build on the coast and could get a hurricane but at the same time it seems the odds of a fire in California are almost absolute. I just hope that the death toll just doesn't go through the roof

look on the bright side. a few more years of the this and the remaining fuel load will be so low that we will not have such big fires....

I don't understand the mentality of people that do not evacuate when a fire is heading towards them. I'd be OUT OF THERE PRONTO. It's only a house and you will not save it with your garden hose.

I had a house with flood waters rising toward it. I was gone in a flash.

Below is an article I found informative on why some insist on calling a forest fire not a forest fire. Apparently to some if houses & buildings are nestled in a forest, it no longer meets their definition of a forest. Of course, no matter what humans name it, it burns just as hot and completely.

    https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/11/...fact-checking/

This is no longer defined as “forest.”

But this is what can happen even if you redefine it as “wildland-urban interface/intermix.”

Loved the last thing in the article posted by Joe.

We have seen these same types of problems with flooding, storm surge and hurricanes. Localities have failed to protect their citizens by forbidding the building of homes and businesses in know high-risk areas — and for many years failed to enact and enforce sensible building codes for the protection of buildings in risky locations. In my youth, homes all over California had beautiful redwood shake roofing — and redwood shake siding — which would dry to tinder in the hot dry California summers, igniting at the first few sparks from distant fires. They are now forbidden, but only after huge loses of homes. It is complicated and causes and results are chaotic in nature.

Where are the codes requiring sensible set-backs from highly flammable local vegetation? And codes specifying non-flammable siding and roofing? And codes requiring adequate cleared roadside verges that won’t turn fire escape routes into graveyards?
Like I have been saying for years. Where is the codes that help people not to build in areas that are unsafe?

I’ve read of instances in some scenic areas with residential enclaves in which the local codes and deed restrictions preclude set-backs and clearing of trees & undergrowth for strictly aesthetic purposes. My specific recollection of discussions on that were in fires in the Lake Tahoe area a couple of years ago in which burned out home owners related that they had actively been prevented from clearing around their homes by the authorities, which infuriated them because of the results. I have seen no reports of that circumstance in these fires yet.

On this we agree, especially with the history of fires out there. If you leave and the fire does not get your home all you have to do is unlock the door and walk in, nothing is different. Sitting there doing nothing and it burns to the ground you die. Easy choice for me.

Just about every place to live has some kind of drawback Fred. Hurricanes, tornadoes, hail storms, floods, fires, snakes, wildlife like bears and cougars, if all of the problems were taken into account we could not live anywhere. If the melting continues that oceans will cover much of the coastal land, where does it end and who gets to make the call?

There should be practical laws to follow and proper conservation should be established to protect many areas, but letting eco-whackos make the rules is stupid. Mother nature has cleared and rebuilt this whol globe for millions of years, either man cleans it up or she will, nothing complicated about that.

I guess I'm not making myself clear about building in areas that have problems. Anyone can build there except the government doesn't rebuild your place or hand out loans in those places.

Now I say that now because years ago I had a place that was flooded. Government came by and bought the place. This was way before flood zones and areas because if it was I never would have bought the house. Now days most if not all the areas have most of the information available to allow a purchaser to make at least a informed decision. Of course, finding some insurance company to insure it might be a problem.
