Boggles the mind to think of the planning and preparation that went into pulling that off. This line of 7 will wear light colored clothes and the next 14 will wear dark clothes. And how to overcome foreshortening. Wow! Just amazing. My Mother was born in 1918.
I looked up “foreshortening,” as I suspected what the term meant and it was something I had not thought about even as I admired the execution of that project. When you add in the planning for the foreshortening as a consequence of the perspective of the photographer, then the final image being correct in proportion is even more impressive.

The Camp was only a year old at that time, and in looking at the other photos, there were very few structures tall enough on enough empty parade ground to stage the picture...My guess is the water tower shown in the extreme background of this pic...It's also possible that the assembly area was on the other side of that water tower, unseen in the photo......Ben

Here's another candidate, depending on what was at the photographer's back if he about-faced...This one was taken in 1918......Ben

Guess I should have looked that up. Figured there ways way less. The day on which the photograph was taken was extremely hot and the heat was intensified by the mass formation of men. The dimensions of the platting for the picture seem astonishing. The camera was placed on a high tower. From the position nearest the camera occupied by Colonel Newman and his staff, to the last man at the top of the torch as platted on the ground was 1,235 feet, or approximately a quarter of a mile. The appended figures will give an adequate idea of the distorted proportions of the actual ground measurements for this photograph:
Base to shoulder: 150 feet.
Right arm: 340 feet.
Widest part of arm holding torch: 12-1/2 feet.
Right thumb: 35 feet.
Thickest part of body: 29 feet.
Left hand (length): 30 feet.
Tablet in left hand: 27 feet.
Face: 60 feet.
Nose: 21 feet.
Longest spike of head piece: 70 feet.
Flame on torch.: 600 feet.
Torch and flame combined: 980 feet.
Number of men in flame of torch: 12,000
Number of men in torch: 2,800
Number of men in right arm: 1,200
Number of men in body, head and balance of figure only: 2,000
Total: 18,000

Do youse guys fall into the trap of opening the click bait pages at the end of articles like I often do? That is where I copied the photo here from something trolling See 75 Historical Photos You Will See Nowhere Else, or something like that. I tell myself it’s a sucker play only meant for the ad views, but I can’t help myself at times. Sometimes the journey can be rewarding like the photo above. More often, I feel like the fool.
