I Had No Idea A Machine Gun Could Do This

The Brits outfitted a .50 Cal. Browning machine gun with a “special sight” and pinged an ISIS commander addressing his troops at over a mile with one shot. Blew his arm and shoulder off.

Should have flipped to automatic and sprayed the camp while the first shot was on the way.

From a helicopter? I'm sure skill was involved but I'd also guess luck played a part.

I think the only connection between the helicopter and the article was the photo of a 50 cal barrel

The gun used for this shot was mounted on a stationary vehicle.

I read that and Joe, I'm with you he should have dumped some more rounds into the crowd. When we kill them from seemingly no where it's got to be hell on their psyche.

After thinking over my suggestion, but never having fired or never even seen a .50 Cal. machine gun fired, I can imagine a single shot from one being accurate at that range, yet automatic fire being wildly inaccurate as the thing bucks around, so much so it may be highly unlikely any rounds would find the camp. It was a choice vision though.

Your assumption is correct Joe. The added influence is heating of the barrel which happens quickly.

I never got to fire one----but I did get to look at the tracers (I think every 10th round) going over my head

One of the first to realize the accuracy potential of the .50 BMG was Carlos Hathcock...I have a book written by Charles Henderson in which Gunny was interviewed concerning that particular shot, in which he said he had never tried a shot at that distance, but thought the exterior ballistics of the .50 made it a possibility...He had a Navy buddy working offshore on one of the aircraft carriers, a Machinist's Mate, who manufactured a scope base for Hathcock's own 10X Unertl from his work gun...They mounted it to a Browning M-2 Gunny had preselected from what was available at camp...He then paddled one shot of 752 gr. ball ammo to sight the Unertl, and waited under cover for his target of opportunity...His spotter saw a squad of single-file NVA slowing to cross a creek one by one...Hathcock said he chose his target, judged the distance and wind variables, then knowing the flight time of the .50, he timed his shot so the projectile and the soldier would arrive at the same point in the creek at the same moment, and paddled another shot...

Gunny said the target fell with just a cavity where his beating heart was a second before...Most of you know that I met Gunny twice in my life and got to carry on a conversation with him both times...When he said an event occurred, then I never have a doubt that it happened exactly as he said...Whether it was duplicated from a hovering helicopter with one shot is only known for sure by those who were there...I'm certain the ISIS commander planned his retirement in a different manner though......Ben

Carlos was a legend. I would not want to be the one in the crosshairs of his scope. People in that area tend to stop living pretty quick.
