Failing the power of the bully pulpit

......there remains plenty of opportunity to take over the story from Trump who continues to refuse to get involved in changing the political discourse in this country.

There is no reason that the broad scope of participants including Maxine Waters et al cannot step up to the bar and change the tone of our discourse.
Not to be ignored is the media---and I'd have to point first at CNN who is obsessed with damning Trump---enough already----there is no reason to go at the same thing for 24 hours and then start over again.

If Trump thought he was losing control of the dialog, he would very likely make a marked change just to regain his position at the head of the parade.

I'm not suggesting "kill em with kindness"----I am suggesting a reversion to civility one step at a time to end this madness.

Agree in principle for the most part. I find the media to be the most contemptuous of the crowd, but all share responsibility.

I saw this after I made my post. I think this articulates my position very well. Unfortunately the same media outlet is not following their own advice is this instance.

Those of us who have spent time in the criminal justice system on either side of it are under no illusions about the number of truly eager evil and/or insane people roaming the populace who bring their own set of twisted animus, not needing any impetus from blathering pols of any persuasion. We have seen just two of them surface this week playing out their fantasies. No amount of “happy talk” is going to dissuade them, I’m thinking.

It's all of us. The government is just another level of us. Look at the way we talk to each other, road rage, mass shootings, where the hell does/did it start. Where do we start, where does anybody start to try and create a better world. We had the hippies with their make love not war and then we went straight to hating everything and everybody. I went to prison in 76 and the world wasn't to bad a place, when I got out in 83 it was safer in prison. I thought it was me for the longest time but soon realized it was the world, I joined for a while but didn't like it. The biker clubs went from beating each other up every weekend to beating everybody else up. I've been at the bottom and the top since 1983 there is not a lot of peace to be found in either place. I'm not a church guy but that's all the love I've found in the last 40 years.
I think it's a lot of what Joe said:

Well did you miss the NYT story, where the NYT held a contest to see who could write the best short story on the killing of Trump? Wow, just wow, the paper who is supposed to be a bit about all the rest condoning crap like that, and then one wonders why the Country is in the toilet? If the media is down to that level of garbage, and that is how the public gets most of it's information, isn't attacking or saying Trump is the bad guy, only get all dressed up in the Emperors clothes?

If the normal citizens, especially the white ones, had done to Obama and his admin, what the left has done to Trump and his, we would have been in the second civil war by now. The hatred is terrible, and I have said that many times in the past.

Yes it is, that's what Dave said.

Nobody missed it James that is what Dave was talking about. He even got on CNN about damning Trump. What he said was it's time for us to stop it, for CNN to stop it, for Trump to stop it. He also got on Maxine to stop it, we all needed to stop it so we could move on.

Earlier I was thinking about simply posting the words "apple pie and motherhood"----and then sit back and see which way James' rant will unfold

Was going to respond, but it's not going to change anything.

Besides I like seeing which way James turns it into a rant. I expect the Clinton or Obama in the next one.

Trump gets under my skin when he calls the press "the enemy of the people." Frankly, I expect more of our president than I expect of others.

I expect more out of the president also but I am quite swiftly told I shouldn't. When I find disgust with Clinton having sex in the oval office, when I insist that the president ought to have a little more class than that, why? What's the difference? Big deal! I don't think we can ever expect less class than Trump but him calling the press an enemy isn't why. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck.........lies are our enemy, lies create upheaval and hate. There is only one reason that we have to read ten papers to try and find truth, it's because nine of them are lieing. I know you read many but it's a different world altogether when you read the NYT or Fox alone. Everyone pushes their own agenda that's expected, news outlets shouldn't IMHO Print the news period theirs a separate page for opinions.

I would say I expect more out of the usual suspects of the press, but I’ve lived too long and seen & read too many of them to expect anything of value. They earn the general disdain they receive.

I find the press and their involvement in all of this to be indefensible for their actions. Long list of reasons but to have the lies told, and the conspiracy theories that they peddle be taken as gospel is beyond the pale. Like I pointed out in another thread, having one of the leading papers for years, the NYT, actually have a contest to see who could write the best assassination story about a sitting POTUS is abhorrent.

Trump is who we hired to fight back against the media, who are so anti Conservative that they resort to lies and bull****, and he is doing a fine job of giving them the business. Sure the office demands more respect, and the person sitting in it should be respectful as well, but the MSM has gone completely off of the rails and in most cases are no better at providing info than the supermarket tabloids.
