A few observations and thoughts on Medicare

I have rated Medicare in the past as the best health care I ever had---and I would still say the same today.

However, Medicare has undergone subtle changes that only show up when something serious happens---as I have recently found out.

There are a lot of costs associated with extended care that previously were covered that no longer are---and those costs are cumulative and could easily become burdensome to many.

I have to admit that they are annoying to me for no other reason than the high cost we pay into Medicare---but I'll manage. Others might not

For specifics, I could get a walker or a cane---but not both. In the hospital I was loaned a "wide" walker which is more stable. However, I could not get a "wide" walker for home because I don't meet their weight requirements

I am currently using a hospital bed with a trapeze which allows me to move around in bed more easily as well as do considerable PT--- those (including a table) are no longer covered by Medicare.

Some of my wound dressings are covered, others are not. All of these things were covered in the past.

To add to the implications of this---the gap insurance which is private insurance and covers the 20% that Medicare does not pay---also will not pick-up any costs
    not honored by Medicare.

Is Medicare a valuable benefit---absolutely, but for those of marginal means this could be problematical---and it seems to be happening without discussion.

Having spent this week at the Permian Basin oil show, I got a chance to meet some of our partners in business in Canada from Calgary. Out of all of the things we talked about taxes and healthcare came up a couple of times. As a matter of fact they are not real crazy about either. They have siad they pay about 49 % of their income into taxes. One told us that his wife had some stomach issues that were really bad and a doctor told her to have some type of special tests run to determine just how severe the problem might be. She was told an appointment for her at the earliest they could get her in was 8-9 months away. Instead of waiting they made an appointment with a doctor in Kalispell, Montana and went down there and had all of the work done there. Yes they had to pay out of pocket, but it goes to show that the Govt Healthcare that some Americans want, is not all that it seems. Yes it would have been much cheaper or maybe even free, but to have to wait 8 months just to get a diagnosis is mad. Then, what about the wait for the surgery that came from the diagnosis, would the patient have to suffer through another 8 months of waiting to have to procedure done?

The things that Dave brought up about Medicare are real and it is a burden to the very people that whole fiasco was supposed to help. I am glad that Dave was able to cover the costs another way, but lesser wealthy people would not. We have a broken system still, and people still think it is an improvement?

A couple of exigencies explain to me the “why” of continued increasing costs of our health care in this country. The easy and cheaper stuff of HC has been explored and addressed in the past. It is the more complicated and thus more expensive drugs, equipment and procedures we take on incrementally as time goes on, and everyone demands those be thrown at them in their plans. Next, we are an aging population, and it is an axiom that as we age we require more and more expensive treatment and care.

I can personally attest my family medical expenses are not anything a rational insurer would take on as examples of the two elements above for the pittance we pay in premiums. We are killing ‘em, and they cannot refuse us or jack up our rates. Every second week one of my wife’s treatments is billed @ $25,000, wherein Medicare and United chisels it down to ~$15K. Every other week is like hitting the lottery for us. Don’t know how long such a system can last.

I worry about Medicare (& Medicaid) coverage for my family members and my younger friends. I believe my generation will be the last, in quite some time, to have necessary and appropriate coverage. Frankly, I'm feeling guilty for having a good pension and healthcare.

Some of you know I was recently in a serious motorcycle accident outside of Las Vegas in Nevada. A semi truck literally ran over me while I was on the Harley. I made it, the Harley did not. I spent the next two months in the hospital undergoing operations. And, once released, I was in therapy for months. Here's the thing, it cost my health insurer over 1.2 million dollars to heal me. So, I can see why insurers (and the government) have cut back.

I'm with you Dave, my stay was close to three months.

I'm starting to get stuff from a million different companies on my Medicare, I'll be eligible come January. I don't have a clue what to do and nobody to ask. The infection I got in my brain left me high dry and stupid. This post will take me 30 minutes, thank god for spell check.

Mike, take a look at this. It might apply to what you have gone through.

I got some insight into loss of cognitive ability during the first week in the hospital---and I did not like it one bit. They had me on an IV pain medication that I could control to some degree---and it made me stupid. It was the worst feeling I have ever had. It was like standing in front of a filing cabinet and everything I needed to function was inside that cabinet----and I had zero ability to open the drawers. I could not do the simplest mathematical calculation or follow a train of reason. If that is the same state as drug addicts find themselves I am at a loss as to why anyone would find that attractive

Yeow, that brings back some really bad memories for me. Yours was even worse than mine. The worst part is that the boss will not let me near a bike since.

No, that's the best part...She's obviously smarter than you were then...I lost all desire to re-mount a motorcycle after going butt-over-teakettle on one coming down a mountain road in the Lincoln National Forest in 1968...I still like looking at a nice Harley or Indian, but that's as close as I'll get......Ben

I still don't know what happened. I have no memory of the accident, the day of the accident, or of the entire month. It's just all gone. Fortunately, the accident (and my involvement in it) was not reported to Utah authorities. By a slip of fate, the Nevada authorities assumed I was dead or would die soon.

I remember going into the corner telling myself, “If I speed up and really lean over, this is going to be lots of fun...,” then nothing after that. It was not fun. I did not even wake up and enjoy the $18,000 helicopter ride. The first thing I recall was waking up with lots of people in surgical masks asking for permission to cut on me and insert devices.

The odd part, Ben, is I still want to ride the damned things, but I cringe every time I see someone ride past without a helmet on. Luckily, we had ours on and even though I was concussed, I can’t tell any lasting effects. The helmet was a mess though.
