Mgrist, what Joe says is correct. I don't know what the terrain is like where you live, but you should seriously consider getting the hell out of there. Don't wait because the roads and highways will be filled with refugees and you might weather the storm trapped in traffic. I don't mean any disrespect using the term refugee. I was one myself barely over a year ago when Harvey hit.

They are also discussing that not only are the winds going to be a problem but the massive amounts of water the storm will be dumping will be as bad or worse than the other hazards. Like the Texas coast last year, the water just kept coming and coming and had no where to go. That water also backs up into rivers and streams as they can not dump their water because of the water levels and it backs up a long way behind the actual storm.

Bottom line, just please be careful and play it safe to any of our friends who are in that area.

Just got off TV where they are now saying it's going to be turning a little farther south. not what I wanted to hear. Im going to be in a mess, I've got a friend in Florida where I could go but I'd never get there the traffic on I-26 is already all one way plus I'd have to leave my roommate, she won't go anywhere. So if nothing else I'll stay and make sure she makes it through. I was born and raised in Miami, been through at least twenty of these things, I get to rate this one now. Once the storm is through and the water recedes I may have to load up and head for hot water and food. A year or two ago we had a thousand year flood here, it was bad. The house I'm in now stayed about two feet up out of the water so I should be fine.

I hope you have a generator. My last combat with a hurricane - Ike - found us trying to start mine only to have it fail. I was lucky enough to get to Home Despot just as a shipment arrived, but what was nowhere to be found for sale were fuel containers to store gasoline. We had to scrounge deeply to get some. There’s always something you do not anticipate. Better to be gone.

    Stay safe.

Get out if you can. if your roomie wants to stay and risk it, let her. Don't let someone elses stupidity get you killed.

That's a harsh statement, but very true. Don't die because someone else is stupid.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, the hurricane tracking image I posted above updates (if an update is available) when you refresh your screen. Typically, it will update at 2a, 8a, 2p and 8p EDT. The updates usually become more frequent as the storm nears landfall.

I do not know what the " normal " beach scene is along the North and South Carolina shore is. But I start looking at the live cams about this time to see the increase in wave action and the distance they travel inland. It gives a fair indication of the current conditions and the extent of damage; as long as the cams stay active.

Well the news I heard this morning says it's likely to be a cat 3 by the time it gets on shore. So that maybe good. The bad is there is no wind system to push it so they are predicting it will stay off shore for a couple of days and then a couple of days on land before it really moves inland. Biggest part of the mess will be rain and if buildings can still be standing with all the wind that will be coming.

Me, I'd be bugging out no matter where it lands on the coast and wait it out.

Well the woman is 65 and useless, not worth the powder it would take to blow her away but if things get serious she'll be alive as long as I am. I'm a little crippled up but I think I can handle this or at least make it until we can run west, sleep in the truck.

I don't know if this thread warrants being moved to current events or just stay right where it is that's not my decision I did want to say that I travel I-20 in Alabama everyday on my commute. Over the years I've seen many many times power companies deployed to various emergency areas. On my commute in today I saw more power trucks and more resources being moved on I-20 eastbound then I've ever seen in 20 years. I know this will sound like an exaggeration but I feel sure that I saw over 2000 various power truck units fire units and other such type vehicles heading east. At one point a convoy of Edison power trucks from Texas past me and there must have been at least 75 of them. All this to say they're certainly expecting a major epic disaster. So sad.

I saw today that the Cajun Navy has at least 1000 members headed that way as well. Seems like the era of needing special FEMA permits and sponsors to help out in a disaster is long gone. They have been pre-staging supplies and fuel, as well as food and water for a few days now, so that after the immediate danger has passed they can be rushed in to provide aid to those who need it. AT least the govt as well as private citizens have learned from previous mistakes, I will give them credit for that.
