i do not think that there is a way to make any of our planetary neighbors habitable. An enclosed colony of a sustainable nature is not within our capabilities at this time. Maby in 50 or so years there may be advances enough to make such a thing possible but don't count on it. Such an undertaking would need the cooperation of many if not all Nations. Don't think that is in the cards.

My thoughts on the subject were formed in my teen years and center on human exploration and learning to be our highest calling as humans even if I personally do not participate. Maybe or probably I just never outgrew juvenile thinking, but I still think that way. I read a lot of science fiction and it bent me that way.
On the other hand, taking large chunks of money and resources by government force from the population not sharing my predilections on something from which they cannot profit, while they have many more fundamental needs is presumptive at best and government abuse at worst.
Now, if Elon Musk or some other person/group wants to take on the task at their expense, then I am fore square behind that all day.

Can we list what has been gained from going into space, the moon, mars, all the space shuttle launches, is there a tangible list.

I am kind of in the middle on this, on one hand we have reaped the rewards of our space program, the technology we "invented" to overcome issues and the things that came from those inventions. It is hard to believe that the Astronauts that landed on the moon went there with computers that were less smart than the phones we now carry in our pockets and that is an amazing thought. I really enjoy the movie Apollo 13 as I remember it happening back in my youth and will watch it occasionally. The things that those guys at NASA had to overcome to bring those astronauts back home was nothing short of a miracle.
Chock me up as one that also thinks that the govt should not be the main contributor to any more missions to the moon, there are a whole bunch of deep pockets that could put up some financing and the private sector can do it much cheaper and better than any govt can. I have to ask, what is left for the moon to show us? I know there are many things but I do not have a clue as to why we should go it alone.

Look at all that can be learned, how we can develop technology and grow as a people....
We need something to unifi us, what greater goal than to return to the moon.....
