A little bit about my extended family

My oldest God Daughter is also my oldest "almost daughter". We have always been very close and that now spans 50 years.

She and her husband, who I also love, recently came "home" from Kansas. I had been quietly praying for years that they would come back before I died without any real expectation that they would. Now that they have, I have had to clarify with God that there is no rush to follow-up on the rest of that request!

In any event---my daughter is a nurse practitioner working at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and her husband is flying for United out of Newark, NJ, after retiring from flying B-52s.

This past Saturday their daughter (my almost granddaughter) was married. Twenty seven years ago I had the honor of driving her and her father (my best friend who has since passed) to the church in my Packard. This past Saturday I had the honor of driving her daughter and her husband to the same church--this time in the Mercedes.

As we approached the church the bride to be announced that she had to pee! There were no options of enlisting the aid of the brides "court"----it was Dad and me. We opted to use the facilities at our old school. There we were---Dad and Grandpop in "support" of the gown and things---but we got the job done with no real injury to modesty----and arrived only a few minutes late---they waited

The newly married couple are now enjoying a honeymoon in Hawaii and when they return they go to Pensacola Fl where the newly minted Ensign will begin pilots training---another generation repeats

As an aside, about 4 weeks ago my son-in-law administered the oath to his then almost son-in-law. That took place in Kansas and I was not there but did see the video---I was impressed (but not a bit surprised) that my son-in-law did not read one word of that oath---it was entirely committed to memory.

And--just for giggles---about 10 years ago I was asked to drive her sister and father to the church. It didn't work out as planned--the Packard decided to take the day off. I ended up taking my Corvette and she and her father drove that to the church---she was a happy bride in any event

One of the great joys of my life has been to see my sons form their own bonds with my dear friends daughters (three of each). On more than one occasion when we are all together I just sit quietly and observe---with great thanks and the occasional tear of joy. I only wish my dear friend could be sitting next to me.

OOH---and just to add a little more "family confusion", my youngest God Daughter (of which I have been blessed with many) is also my youngest Granddaughter.

Thank you Bob--and I could not agree more.

A couple of years ago our middle son returned after wondering the world for years--including 4 years in China-----that was another joyous occasion. He has slipped into the family again as if he had never been gone

I have added a picture of my "daughter" and "granddaughter" as well as the new couple in the back of the Mercedes as we prepared to leave the church.

One more---my almost daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson.

Thanks for bringing us along, but for some reason I wanted to break out in a song from my youth, “I Am My Own Grandpa,” but I can’t remember the words.

Oh, and the bride is radiant!

Family & extended Family are so very important & it sounds like you have a wonderful family that reflects great honor and pride....

I've got a cousin that worked in PICU @ Philly Children's Hosp before moving to Chicago and now works in a PICU there, my hat's off to anybody who works with Children, let alone in a Children's hospital, takes a very special person to be able to see and deal with everything they do. It's a very very special person who can work with Children like that, you should be extra proud of her, it's harder to work with children than it is to go into the military, children are such precious gifts and so innocent and trusting......

That's why I got out of EMS, could not deal with it....the abuse, the heartache, how you can't get emotionally attached in even a few min is beyond me.....and then the rage I felt at some so called parents....your daughter is a very special person......

Thanks for coming along Joe---and yes she was radiant!

    Here is your song:

Many, many years ago when I was 23
I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be

This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law and really changed my life
For now my daughter was my mother 'cause she was my father's wife

And to complicate the matter even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad
And so he became my uncle though it mad me very sad
    Related

For if he were my uncle that would also made him brother
Of the widows grown-up daughter who was of course my stepmother

Father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my grandchild for he was my daughter's son

My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue
Because although she is my wife she's my grandmother two

Now if my wife is my grandmother then I'm her grandchild
And every time I think of it, nearly drives me wild

'Cause now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother I am my own grandpaw

    Oh I'm my own grandpaw
    I'm my own grandpaw
It sounds funny I know but it really is so
    I'm my own grandpaw
    (Listen to this now)
    I'm my own grandpaw
    I'm my own grandpaw
    I'm my own grandpaw

That is one beautiful bride for sure. I'm getting along now and have never met a couple great grand kids, got a pix and that's how close that far out knowing all the family.

I've got ten grandchildren stretched from Michigan to Nevada and back into South Carolina and there is another ten that are not blood but are all almost daughters as close to me as my own. They all know me but it's been years since I could keep up.
Good for you Dave and good for all those you cherish, love will keep us together as the captain and taniel? sang.
