Red Buds are probably six weeks off for us--maybe more.
I love Red Buds---they are in a way the Wren of the tree world---a grand statement from such a small source.

Elsewhere, the arctic is seeing temps above freezing and it’s customary winter weather has moved into Europe and Asia freezing their asses off. They named the storm The Beast From The East. Snowed in Rome last week, which it hardly ever does. A foot of snow in Wales forecast today.

50-65 mph winds today with 6"+ of snow by tomorrow morning.
Possibly the worst part is that we just had the wettest Feb on record---more than 5" above normal, the ground has thawed and with this level of saturation a lot of trees are likely going to come down. Our home place was once a Christmas tree farm and we have a lot of 60-80' Eastern White Pine left over from that period and in storms like this we commonly have a few come down. So far none have hit any of the buildings--but they have gotten close. I just had two taken down behind the tenant's house that were leaning. I hope we make it OK, when they go it leaves a big hole in the landscape.

Thanks Don---the lights have been blinking and at noon a State Trooper turned around in my lane and went back in the direction he had come from, a few minutes latter a fire engine and rescue team went past---they appeared to stop around the next corner
At this point the wind is a mixed bag. The snow is heavy but the wind is keeping it off the pine trees---which is a help. We have about 12 hours more to go.
I had an authority meeting here last night so I got off Long Island ahead of thisThey are getting hammered worse there than we are.

Thanks Tom---they weren't far from wrong in calling it a bomb. Luckily, at this point I lost only one 40' pine. The pine left an apple tree in question. After I take a ride around I might find more. We had a number of power bumps but never entirely lost power.
Not far from here a man was killed last night when a tree came down on his car. As my father was want to say: "not fit for man nor beast". That pretty well summed it up.
We still have some residual wind but nothing like what we did have and it has swung around to the SE this morning.
The folks along the coast got hammered far worse than we did inland.

Have these kind of Nor'easter massive, storms been frequent historically or is it just because we have so much news coverage now that we know everything going on. Dave once again I hope you got through this with minimal damage. I had visions of that nice Mercedes being smashed buy a tree limb. Now that would have just been sickening.

I had a house once surrounded by giant pines. Always feared a big blow toppling one on me or mine. Sold the house and read when an oak tree over the porch fell on the new owner and killed him. No guarantees in life.

Nor'easters have existed historically with late winter and early spring being the most common time for them--what seems to have changed is both severity and frequency of these storms. While our awareness of them has heightened with the increased coverage there is a definite change in pattern.

I have a lot of 100'+ Pine trees on my place. It is always amazing how they are still upright after a big blow. In 28 years, I've only had one come down. It was brought down by Hurricane Ike several years ago.

The problem I have is the combination of wind and soil saturation. We went into this storm at 100% saturation, it was mostly a question of how many would come down.
This happened on the backend of the storm when the wind had come around to the NW.
I have culled at least 12 in the past year to take out the most likely victims, this was not one that seemed to be in jeopardy.
