Tesla' Solar Roof Tiles Announced Cheaper Than Expected

40% cover of a 2000 sq. ft. home in New York with battery back-up claimed to calculate to cost $50K would produce $64K of energy in 30 years. One would think it would be much better in sunny climes. Get your reservations in early.

Did not read the article but when I did research to see if it was worth it to put a solar system on my house I determined that by the time I recoup the cost in energy savings the panels would be near the end of their life cycle.

I do agree that the roof tile approach is brilliant. Maybe they can get the cost down even further. There's a reason why I live in the sunny desert but very few homes have solar.

Have you colored your roof white, Phil? That seems like a sensible step for Arizonans to me.

Flat roofs are painted white but mine is pitched and shingled.

I wonder why those cannot be colored a reflective white when installed? I understand why painting them now would be too much.

When I still owned Shooter's Station, we contracted to have the original red steel roof repainted to a reflective silver...The resulting reduction in electricity used surprised even me......Ben

Thinking further on the white roof issue: perhaps the answer to why more are not white is because the ones visible would become a stained eyesore over time. We value looks more than function in many cases.

A guy down the street painted his house red (reflective paint ) and has a green tin roof. A real eye sore but luckily I very rarely see it other than if i walk my dog down his street.

Musk finally released the price, which this article says is less than a traditional surface. If that is true, why would anyone go elsewhere? Sounds like the bargain of the century as presented.

    Excellent

I just sent that off to me "almost daughter" and her husband who just moved back here from Kansas and are in the beginning stages of restoring their circa 1800 farm house which has a slate roof in need of replacement.

If you can only get the job done by a Tesla crew, as stated in the article, I wonder how long it will take for them to gear up for the rush?

If it is all as presented and I were a younger man, I would be rushing to get a position selling and installing these roofs. Why would anyone install a new roof that is just a roof, if you could buy one cheaper that produces electricity and has an infinite warranty? I wonder if the weight requires special structural needs? There has to be a kicker here. My skeptical nature tells me this is too good to be true by leaps & bounds, but I hope it is true.

I wonder if the roofs will survive 105 mph winds for 5 hours? If it won't stand that then they wouldn't work down here.

    I'm bummed!

I just replaced my roof about 2 years ago. I would love to have given this a try..............

Read down to the contractor's reply. He said the numbers were a little off and the actual cost was 10 times the cost of shingles. He also said that maybe they took into account the energy savings when figuring the end cost. Good idea when they get the bugs worked out.

I could not find any comments are replies, James. Can you point me to them or quote the relevant one(s) here. Amortizing out prospective solar production over X number of years in figuring "costs" would be, like, cheating, 'eh?
