My New Favorite Fried Chicken Joint🍗

The name is Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken.

The original is in Memphis, Tenn., and is now spreading out with franchises in 15 locations in 9 states so far. The fare is mildly hot breaded fried chicken and sides plus deserts. That's it, but for me that's enough.

My former favorite resaurant fried chicken was a small chain in Houston, Frenchy's, which is very similar, but not quite as tasty to my way of thinking. Both are mildly spicy hot with moderate crusty breading. Popeye's is good also and can be found widely in the South, but not quite up to the qualty of the other two. Since I moved to San Antonio, Frenchy's is out of reach for a quick chicken fix, and the new Gus's franchise closest to me is in downtown Austin, about an hour fifteen away, but still doable for a chick-a-holic like me.

The sides are nothing to write home about, but passable, although having no mashed spuds is a disappointment, I must say. The Gus's chicken though cures all ills. Look for one coming your way.

I don't like yardbird after being forced by economic circumstances beyond my control to live on it for six months after my first divorce...However, I'll go by Church's once in a while for their double chicken-fried steak basket with two sides and a biscuit for about $6.00 or so...

Tasty and cheap; just my style......Ben

Church's has a new breading for one of their chicken choices which has jalapeno flavoring in it, which I find acceptable, although the breading is on the decidely thick side. Warning: their "mashed potatoes" are reprehensible...but their cold slaw is just right.

Need to try their chicken-fried steak now. I wonder if I could get them to use the jalapeno breading recipe on the chicken-fried steak?

If you want real southern fried chicken, forget those chain places and take a ride over to Willie Mae's Scotch House in NOLA., now that right there is good shicken

We have tried the recipe (found online) a couple of times. "We" had to tweak it a bit (altitude) to get the breading to work. Pretty good, but a little too much prep for me.

My favorite fried chicken story is still from "Mrs White's Golden Rule Cafe" in Phoenix. Many years ago when we went there for lunch once, the very large black woman taking our order asked my very large friend "would that be one chicken or two?" when he ordered his fried chicken lunch.

It was a joke, but not to me. That was good chicken.

You might want to give Gus’s a shot and maybe they will change your opinion of franchise eateries. You are in luck because there is one in Ft. Worth (I’m extremely envious) —

Be forewarned, you’ll never look at bland Chicken Express in the same way again...I used to think their stuff was OK.

I like Kentucky Fried Chicken's flavor but the pieces these days are so small. For a good hearty piece of meat I enjoy Church's.

The best fried chicken anywhere died with my Grandmama...She raised them, fed them with corn from the field, gathered the eggs, kept the varmints out of the henhouse, wrung their necks, plucked and fried them...All I ever got to do was feed them once in a while and eat them...I'd give $1,000 cash right now for a plate of her fried chicken, mashed taters, hot water cornbread and cold iced tea made from well water...Maybe follow it up with some iced down watermelon and hand-cranked vanilla ice cream......Ben
