We went to Germany a few months ago and it was down right affordable. Well except for the beer at Octoberfest...

Sweden was a complete different story, $$$WOW$$$... It was better than when we went 10 years ago, but that isn't saying much.

From my morning email briefing from the WSJ:
    U.K. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION GROWS
Britain’s industrial output grew 2.1% in November, partially fueled by a comeback of oil production in the North Sea, writes Jason Douglas and Wiktor Szary.
Other sectors including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment and transportation also boosted Britain’s production numbers.
Still, most economists expect the U.K. economy to slow down in 2017 because of inflation hitting consumers in the wallet and the added uncertainty over the U.K.’s future ties to the EU.
Keep in mind that at this point they are still part of the EU.

Once the collectivist set their hooks, they will never willingly stop reeling in the prey.

The party is far from over. The Supreme Court (Britain's) has ruled that Parliament has to vote to approve leaving the EU--and that Ireland, Scotland and Wales need be consulted in that.

That is going over like a tepid cup of tea in Scotland:

    From the WSJ:
Margaritis Schinas, European Commission spokesman, said he wouldn’t comment on issues pertaining to legal and constitutional order of member states. “This was a judgment decision for the U.K. Supreme Court to take, it’s now up to the British government to the United Kingdom to draw the consequences from that decision,” he said.

The Scottish National Party, which strongly opposes leaving the single market, said it welcomed the ruling and would attempt to sway the path of Brexit by lodging 50 amendments to the government bill.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the U.K. government was politically obliged to consult the Scottish Parliament about Brexit even though the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Mrs. May doesn’t legally need its consent.

“It is becoming clearer by the day that Scotland’s voice is simply not being heard or listened to within the U.K.,” Ms. Sturgeon said. She said government’s comments about Scotland being an equal partner “are being exposed as nothing more than empty rhetoric.”
Scotland might pursue their own exit strategy.

You would find the article on social-democracy of real interest, I am sure.

An interesting perspective especially since I am so far from the Euro scene. However, although billed as a European view, it seemed only to present what was happening in France. I did not understand that the Le Pens' National Front borrowed so much from the hard left though. Too much there I know so little about. We are worlds apart from them, and thank goodness. May it stay that way.

    From my WSJ email bag:

U.K. Real Wages Are Now Actually Falling: Unemployment fell further in the three months to March but real wages also declined for the first time in more than two years, signalling the continued squeeze from accelerating inflation.

Ms May's lack luster performance last night and the continuing slide of the British economy does not bode well for the Br-exit crowd.

The sweet taste of "independence" seems to be settling in with a bit of a curdle in the bowl.

Some reports I have seen seem to lay her poor showing more on her performance in the terror/immigration issues than Brexit, but I am far away. Britain has made the grievous mistake of importing hordes of Muslims into their voting electorate. I am guessing that they voted Labor to the man (and woman). If the real indigenous Brits view Jeremy Corbyn as helpful in dealing with terrorists and/or immigrants, they are bigger fools than even I thought.

There is little doubt now though that Brexit is in deep trouble.

Things seem not to be going smoothly towards an orderly exit.

    ...and from the NYT:

LONDON — Facing the prospect of a humiliating defeat, Prime Minister Theresa May was expected to announce on Monday plans to postpone a parliamentary vote on her proposal for Britain’s departure from the European Union, throwing the process into disarray and highlighting her tenuous hold on power.

Mrs. May planned to make an unscheduled address to Parliament on Monday afternoon, after a round of calls to cabinet ministers. Several British news organizations, citing unidentified sources, reported that she would delay the vote after concluding that she was likely to fail a parliamentary test on which she had staked her reputation.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, effectively confirmed the planned postponement in a statement saying that the prime minister’s “Brexit deal is so disastrous” that the government “has taken the desperate step of delaying its own vote at the eleventh hour.”

If anything, the path to the exit has become more challenging.

Surely Ms May deserves some of the credit for this pending failure that has cost Britain dearly----but there is plenty more that should share in this---and most of them have left "town".

My own guess is that Brexit will die a slow death from it's own hand.

I currently have two visitors from Ireland and over a working lunch today we got into a conversation about Brexit. I asked if they thought Ms May would continue to survive as Prime Minister. The response was humorous: "only because no one else wants to hold the baby".

I need to add that to my library
