I guess the Brits are tired of having somebody who does not live there tell them what to do, as well as taxing and making them take refugees they do not want. Sounds like the way people feel about some of the political ploys going on here. Hopefully this will become a good trend.

I never understood the desire to join the EU...Seems like there'd be too much potential for too many riders, and not enough load-carriers......Ben

It started out as a fairly simple concept---open borders, free trade, common currency---and then it began to grow warts.

At the outset I loved it---I used to have a drawer half full of zip lock bags of money--all separated by country. Depending on my itinerary I would pull the needed stash and toss into my suitcase. That for most European trips got me down to three bags, Euro, Swiss Franc and British Pound. The Euro covered Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece, Belgium and the Netherlands.

As time went on it lost the initial value of simplification and replaced it with increasing complexity and restrictiveness. The European Countries have always (in my time there) had an air of "motherhood" about them but as the EU ages they became increasingly paternal---and overreaching. Just one simple example is what they have done with food regulations. It is one thing to regulate food sources in commerce but when it comes to regulating food gathered, grown, foraged, caught etc for your own use---which in many cases threaten the very traditions and heritage of people that have been doing these things for centuries--that crosses a line.

The EU has put themselves squarely in the position of big brother and increasingly the people have felt relegated to "subjects", without power or influence.

...not different than many people are feeling here.

Thanks, Dave, that summarizes what I was pretty sure I knew about it (borders, currency)...It seems the open borders may be what led them to their large influx of Muslims, both regular and radical...

The last time I was in the Netherlands I converted my US dollars into Dutch Guilders, which I used to support the local "entertainment" industry......Ben

Statists like the biggest and most encompassing state they can get. Easier that way to force the peons to do what they know is best for them. Dispersing power puts a distinct cramp in their style. The Euro currency is handsome and rational though.

Does anyone remember the threats and promises of a 1/1/2000 computer financial disaster that was a bust? This will be a redo with the possible caution that in 2000 the result was mechanical and largely outside human influence, while the results of Brexit can be a self-fulfilling prophesy effect of human reaction to false expectations. I.e., stock markets are infamous for over reaction.

    Not a good comparison councilor.

We had a lot of advanced notice and everyone expended huge amounts of effort and capital to fix the clearly known issues before they could become problems. That is a long way from where we are with this one.

I think the problems will be easily fixed, if common sense solutions are proposed. The problem with getting politicians and scholars involved is they like to complicate things, either for gaining an advantage monetarily or as a means of controlling an outcome or statistic. Corruption always seems to rear its ugly head in these types of situations and it always hurts the "normal" people more than it bothers the rich and educated.

If they started taking those who are convicted of corruption out to a stone wall and in front of a firing squad, we would have much less to worry about. Or tar and feathers would also work.

This is clearly a political issue which by default will involve politicians to deal with it.

Graph of some representative entities' GDP against the European Union, some of which are European countries not wanting into the EU. Guess who is sucking hind teat?

    Does GB need the EU?

Funny thing is the UK millenials are now bitching about how their future was compromised by the baby Boomers who voted overwhemingly for exit. It's a great civics lesson to them. They had a low turnout, didn't pay attention to politics and now they bitch that they were disenfranhised. hello you did nothing and got what you claim to have not wanted. Next time get off your asses, pay attention and get involved. GO Vote or be contentent when others make decisions for you. Bunch of self entitled little snots.....

It only rained on them. Amazingly, they are now engaged in an internet petition demanding a mulligan that is apparently raging with fraud from robot and foreign participation.
