NRA: Texas open carry rallies ‘downright weird’ and ‘scary’

This is the one of the most sensical (hmm, spell check doesn't like that word, but nonsensical is ok. ) things the NRA has said during our long battle for the 2nd Amendment. Yes, I am a member, a Lifetime Endowment member. I sometimes disagree with what they say, but this time they are spot-on.

Why go out of your way to seem like a total nut and scare the general population? This issue is handled at the legislative level and lobbying the politicians is the most effective way to get the laws changed. Scaring the general population just gets them to lobby against us.

AUSTIN — Starbucks, Chipotle, Sonic and other food and drink chains have an unexpected new ally in their recent decisions to discourage the carrying of firearms in their establishments: the NRA.

On Friday, the NRA weighed in on a spate of recent open carry rallies across Texas, calling them “scary” and “shows a lack of consideration and manners” out of character in the Lone Star State.

“Yet while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms,” the NRA statement read.

“Let’s not mince words, not only is it rare, it’s downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself,” it added. “It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates.”

I couldn't agree more Mike. Open carry is a good way to target yourself. Concealed carry is the thinking man's game.

I could not agree more. One of the conditions of my concealed permit is just that---it must be concealed. If I carry in a way that exposes even partially and occasionally I can lose my permit.

Then we have the open carry crowd---some of whom show up at the local Patriot meetings---and they are for the most part a scary bunch, dressed in camo and sitting in the back row. There is no law against open carry in PA---until you get into a vehicle--then it is considered concealed and without a permit you are breaking the law. To be legal the gun has to be unloaded, cased and remote from the ammo.

Even the NRA is Sick of the Open Carry Demonstrations in Texas

"It is interesting to watch the various factions on the pro-gun side of the dispute stake out their own territory on the issue of open carry. The Tarrant County group seems to think it's a rejection of personal liberty to suggest that people shouldn't walk into a restaurant with a semi-automatic rifle, while Open Carry Texas believes demonstrations are reasonable so long as leaders have alerted the police beforehand and are waving flags indicating to passers-by what they're up to. The NRA, meanwhile, considers all of this to be "downright weird," "scary" "foolishness" that's "unneighborly," which presumably puts them on the same side as a lot of people who never thought they'd agree with the NRA about anything."

Guys, I'm very much pro-gun. I carry a 1911 A1 practically every day. But I carry concealed. Even I think open carry is crazy and makes us gun guys look like radical kooks. Let's not give those lunatic's Feinstein and Pelossi any traction.

I agree, I don't see the point even if you can open carry to rub it in someones face. To me it is like the gay protesters
at Chick Filet, it didn't do their cause and good either.

Saw a photo of nuts trying to contain the other nuts. Somehow it fits.

The NYC radio News had a short interview on this evening with a spokesman for this bunch of screwballs----he did a whole lot to cement the image people have already formed of them.

The NRA has back-tracked and has withdrawn its criticism of the open-carry screwballs' actions. I thought they got it right the first time.

I am once again disappointed in the NRA.They had it right and then backed down under pressure from the nut groups. This does not help our cause.

That knee-jerk reaction once again hitting you in the face, 'eh Dave. You might need to work on that.

Not at all---there are some sources that always need verification and two of them happen to be Fox and wacojoe---so this was the perfect storm of potentially bad information.
