    Making do

My Savage .22 semi-auto rifle had a trigger problem. I will work on triggers up to a point---but this wasn't the kind of trigger I wanted anything to do with---far BELOW my level of expertise!

So--off to the gunsmith. Four months and $20 latter I got it back--but it wouldn't hit the side of a barn.

Examination quickly revealed the scope was only tight on the dovetail on the front mount and the rear ring wasn't even connected!

So--this afternoon it was time to remount the scope and sight it in---any excuse to shoot is a good excuse

Darn shame I can't use it to pick off the squirrels in the bird feeders---semi-auto rifles aren't legal to hunt with in PA!

I would never break the law

While this one with a 6X scope was in the shop I had been using an old bolt action with a peep sight---my old eyes do right well with a peep sight

That's not hunting; that's protecting your castle from invasion.

We had a red squirrel invasion one year. I shot 52. Haven't seen any in six years.

First, before y'all post all y'alls glorified exploits about being an Annie Oakley reborn, there is one thing you should be made aware of.

They are not squirrels. Them dad blasted things are " Tree Rats " and should be shown no mercy at all.

About time for an update on the squirrel wars

It is again open season on squirrels in PA--which will be the case until the end of Feb. We have a daily bag limit of 6 combined, gray, red, and fox. I spent an entire weekend at the cottage New Years week and only saw and took 4 all week. I think I am making progress because there have been a lot of days in the past that I got my limit.

Now this past weekend---3 more. That combined with the 4 in the freezer makes for an excellent squirrel pie

One of the things that happens this time of year is ---breeding season---these little buggers become lovers---and the little fellows personal, non-food, royal collection of nuts---swell to tremendous proportion. Now----I would NEVER do this--cause it would be against the game laws---and I would never ever violate the game laws---honest! But-------I still fantasize---even at my age, and I have this air rifle---it has a 6X scope on it---it is amazingly accurate----but not legal to shoot any game animal with in PA---but I can still fantasize! On occasion I see one of these robbers at the platform feeder---standing on the railing---with his tail up---facing away from me when I am in the garage----kind of waving those swollen globes at me---knowing he is going to go off and make BABIES. Then I imagine making a perfectly placed shot with my air rifle and watching that miserable bugger launch himself into the air--and converting himself within the span of a millisecond from a grey squirrel to a flying squirrel.

Gosh I wish I weren't such a stickler for the law

...and since I didn't want to sully the photo thread I will share this wonderful sight with all of you fellow squirrel haters

For a larger format of the picture.

It has been a hectic morning here

I come up here for R&R---and I end up with "work" to do. There are three grays out in the garage soaking in salt water and vinegar---all before I had my first cup of coffee down this morning!

There is still one running around apparently looking for its missing play mates----I expect I'll be able to reintroduce them before noon

    People eat squirrels?

I guess they are not enough of a problem around here to harvest them. I have a lot of rabbits in my yards but they do not cause any problems.

It's not easy to find better "comfort food" than a good squirrel pie----and now there are 4 in the pot

As for rabbits; cottontails and snowshoes are excellent eating---if those are jackrabbits in your yard ----they are only good for target practice

I don't hunt and just never liked shooting critters for target practice. However! This house and neighborhood that I'm in is over run with squirrels and I'm tired of fixing holes in the soffit and facia and tired of wondering what they are tearing up in the attic. I'm in the middle of the hood and my pellet gun has a suppressor, yes a suppressor with 1300 FPS so when I walk out the door with it everybody runs. So careful I am, have got two so far.

I have no problem with using a few of God's creations for target practice; coyotes, ground hogs, fox, are examples.

As for jackrabbits---we don't have them around here but I sure met a lot while wondering around in the Utah deserts and while I never shot one (or tried) I was told they were not edible. Being a bit of a skeptic I found the stories of parasites and disease a little hard to believe.

Not that it made me want to seek out a meal of jackrabbit I did find out that they are in fact edible and were common fare to the pioneers and the poor during the depression. The connotation of "peasant food" probably did not help their image as table fare.

We were always taught to only eat jackrabbits after the first freeze, and to check them for worms during the field dressing part of the show.

They scream sometimes when you break their necks. Shocked me the first time - never heard a rabbit make noise before.
