In honor of Leonard Cohen, a great song writer, who died today. I could post one of his songs sung by the writer (I posted one earlier), but I have chosen one of my favorites of his sung by another great songwriter, Neil Diamond, because he did it so well on the only album I know of that he sang other people's songs exclusively, as a testimonial - "Rainbow."

Suzanne, sung by Neil Diamond —

    Well--that was worth waiting for

Mr. Cohen claimed that song was stolen from him but I am not sure of the details of that claim. It was first recorded by Judy Collins and latter they performed it together.

One of Mr. Cohen's more memorable statements was: "I don’t want to work for pay, but I want to be paid for my work."

"Political extremism involves two prime ingredients: an excessively simple diagnosis of the world's ills, and a conviction that there are identifiable villains back of it all." ---John W. Gardner

I didn't know Cohen once had a good singing voice until you posted the song with Collins from 40 years ago. As I mentioned, I had posted the song from last year's Cohen album, "Almost Like The Blues", last year on this thread (#38), but it is probably too morose for most here. The contrast in voice qualty between Cohen 1976 & 2015 couldn't be greater, I think.

Gotta share this one — Dolly Parton & Alison Krauss, two queens of Country Music in a fine duet — "Sweet Music Man."

    Dolly has legs

While we are on this Leonard Cohen/Country kick here is one of his many thoughtful compositions sung by the great Johnny Cash.

...and this one from Dolly is one of my favorite of hers, probably because of the story she tells which I believe is true.

Thank you very much for posting that and the links
This may interest you, Dave...As many know, one of my favorite history authors is William L. Shirer...Right now I'm reading "The Nightmare Years" for review, and ran across this entry...

He had been fired from the Chicago Tribune in 1932 while in Vienna...It was tough finding another job as a reporter during the depression, even in Europe, so he and his new bride decided to go to Spain on a tramp steamer where they could live cheaply until he could find work...They found a three-story double villa in a fishing village, and paid $180,00 up front for a years rent on half of it...

As it turned out the other half was occupied by Andres Segovia whom he had met casually after a concert in Vienna...He said Segovia was one of the most gracious people he ever met, and when he found out Shirer was writing a book, he moved his morning practice ritual which he did from 7 to noon to the farthest corner of the house so as not to disturb his writing...Shirer could not convince him that his gesture was unnecessary...

He said Segovia visited them 3 or 4 evenings a week where they listened to Shirer's collection of Asian melodies flayed on the Indian equivalent of the guitar...Segovia learned the notes and played along with the recording, adding the songs to his own repertoire...Segovia also had a deep interest in literature, especially Cervantes, and gave him a leather-bound edition of Don Quixote as a farewell gift...

I guess sometimes the guitar-playing next door neighbor turns out to be OK......Ben

Very nice story Ben---thank you for that

It's warming to know he was more than just an exceptional musician.

Any time...I'm finding coincidences all the time in my research...For instance, I read last night that Shirer also knew H.R. Knickerbocker on whom I'm writing a separate article......Ben
