WASHINGTON - Attorney General Michael Mukasey, the no-nonsense former federal judge who took over the Justice Department after Alberto Gonzales resigned in disgrace, was "conscious, conversant and alert" after collapsing during a speech Thursday night, the Justice Department said.

The 67-year-old Mukasey was rushed to George Washington University Hospital. Spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement that Mukasey was "conscious, conversant and alert" but would be held overnight for observation
