I just watched a National Geographic Explorer special on the history of smallpox, and I admit that it scared me to death. There were many things that I did not know about this disease in the program, and many that I did. I knew that the disease has not been seen actively in a human since the 1980’s, that our immunity vaccinations were no longer effective, that the disease is airborne and that the only two known repositories of the virus are the Vector lab in Russia and the CDC in the US, but it is highly suspected and feared that rogue states hold some also. What I never had seen before was film of the horrible disease processes, and been presented with the facts of the devastation to entire cultures this disease has brought over the ages until very recently.
The erstwhile eradication of the disease was engineered with great effort and resolve through perhaps mankind’s most earnest international cooperative effort, ever. Now, fears of catastrophic undoing of that work are well placed. Is there any doubt that some people are present on this planet that would unleash this disease on us, and by its natural progression, on their own? Not to me.
Should we wait to inoculate? Seems that I heard elsewhere that the reasons for the wait were twofold – not enough vaccine for everyone now, and there are some side effects to the vaccine. Perhaps someone here has better knowledge on that matter. It was not covered in the special.
Two mentions in the piece alarmed me the most. One, the Russians (and perhaps the US as well) were working on a more virulent strain of the virus, which would be worse than the disease which has already proven to be mankind’s worst enemy, and perhaps beyond the protection of the cowpox vaccine. And, two, if the Iraqi’s do not already have it, it persists at least one hundred fifty years with the bodies of the dead in the grave! It will be available to determined lunatics and monsters for at least as long as you and I are alive no matter what we do. Evidence is mounting that we have among us one (or more) homegrown lunatic/monster that planted pestilence in the mails.
I formulated a rule in my practice of tort law that I called “Joe’s Law” that states – given enough time, if something bad can happen, it will happen. Pray that I am wrong.
