    I've been canceled

Yesterday was, once upon a time, my birthday---as well as Columbus Day---but alas we are no more Poor Chris has been canceled and replaced with Indigenous Peoples' Day. I suffer as collateral damage the loss of my birthday To add to the loss of respect, this nuevo holiday is not Oct 12th but falls on the second Monday of October. While it isn't all bad that I will have no more birthday's I do feel a ting of regret for poor old Chris

Out of a sense of empathy my dear wife gave me a last birthday present---and along with some of the the kids the last birthday party It was a fitting goodbye to the personal holiday that I have celebrated for the past 80 years. I now look forward to no more birthdays and obviously the promise of immortality, as legislated by our dear old uncle

I expect this gift from my wife to help maintain me at a high level of wokeness as time tics on

As I recall, there's a James Bond scene wherein he makes an espresso in front of Q, who marvels over the multiple steps it took to create. As Bond hands him the cup, M sardonically says, "Is that all it does?"

Making espresso or cappuccino with my current machine is somewhat involved---and takes practice. There are multiple manual interventions necessary to get anything from it. Some of those interventions are completely by feel and look. Just the tamping of the grind in the filter unit is important---to little and weak output, too much and bitterness jumps up. Getting it just right takes a lot of time. The same is true in making the steamed and frothed milk--it is an art.
With this new one---stand back---it does it all by itself

Now if the Indians had just kept Chris out, what a wonderful world this might have been.

    Happy Birthday Dave.

Could become Indigenous Peoples Day - though as George Carlin pointed out, there are no indigenous people in the USA. Those labeled indigenous came into our land over a land bridge.

A good friend of mine was moose hunting in Newfoundland and noticed a lack of any signs of indigenous peoples--something he always looks for. He asked his "Newfi" guide about his observation and was told there were none When questioned as to the reason he was told----"because we killed em all". Subsequent research showed that answer to be incomplete but substantially correct

Here we had the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City which "accepted" Native Americans from multiple tribes. It shut down in 1984.

Now we look back and see it was cultural genocide. Tribal leaders pointed out that their children, who attended such schools, returned without tangible skills utilized on reservations.

The first off-reservation school, Carlisle Indian School (1879) in Pennsylvania had a motto, “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” The schools were known for their brutal assimilation practices that forced students to change their clothing, language and culture.

Our friends to the north outdid everyone in the abuse of their children who were mandated to attend boarding schools far from their families and homes. Many were stripped of their humanity---and many were stripped of their very lives.

In true Canadian fashion, the Toronto Star (the biggest paper in Canada) concealed that story in the "interior" of the paper!

Our country slowly warmed up - but hit its stride with the appointment of Deb Haaland, member of Laguna Pueblo tribe, as Secretary of The Interior. She's the first Native American cabinet member.
