Extinction in the future is not assured. Starvation right now is. Cancer right now is.
This whole thread sounds like people who like the idea of space exploration and are looking for ways to justify what they want rather than a serious consideration of what we choose to ignore in order to do that.
To me, it is the "I don't know them" problem. It is hard to feel any real duty towards people one does not know. People are starving but that's in Africa, I don't know them, so I don't feel any responsibility to help them if it means not doing something i want to do. That's completely natural.
So there it is. You want to say how my money is spent.
Of course I do. It's called taxes and you are already telling me that spending on space is a good thing. I should have the same right you claim for yourself.
I think we should look for starving alien races to save. :duhhh:
To be clear, I think virtually all government spending should be based on voluntary contributions. That way we can really see how popular programs are. National defense should be compulsory.

I wonder if the starving alien thing might have been subconscious? I’m pretty sure I watched every Twilight Zone multiple times in college.
Oh well, someday maybe I’ll have an original thought.
