We're surrounded by BLM land (not THAT BLM) here and make the most of it. I camp on it when traveling - and love it (as do the wild horses).

Yeah people want the forest swept clean or massive logging and prescribed burns which it not all that easy to do to prevent fires.
And others want to live in a forest type area.
Not sure of the right answer, but finger pointing doesn't get anything accomplished.
It's a very sad deal. Folks seem to forget about the animals and the toll it takes on them. The Governor has even stated that California is not doing enough to manage their forests. It won't be long if it has not already happened that homeowners in fire prone areas will not be able to get homeowners insurance or if they can it will be 10X the normal rate.

Massive California and West Coast wildfires have been periodically sweeping the area for as far back as scientist can drag for evidence. It is the way the geography lies. Even the Indians knew that and set fires to compensate. The massive fires were prevalent after the White Man settled the area until we got the brilliant idea to suppress them and build towns and housing among the forest about 70-80 years ago.
Now, with 70-80 years of undergrowth and human habitation infiltrated throughout carrying out safe clearing fires in the tender boxes we have cultivated is virtually impossible. It’s OK though because the bitch, Mother Nature, will do the job for us and she could not care less for pesky human habitation.
