Well some guys go in the morning and have coffee with all their buddies I have to go to my friends Veterinarian Clinic and sit in the back and watch him take care of all the animals that come in and we chat in between his patients. Anyway I mentioned the issues I was having with my bird feeders and he's the one that suggested Tractor Supply. They had a great supply of all the feeds and equipment. So I stumbled on it because of him
This has been a interesting conversation to follow.
I learned a new term today, "squirrel baffles."

On the subject of bird seed---most of the store bought variety is less than perfect from the standpoint of the birds. That can be easily determined by what you see on the ground under a feeder.
For mixed seed I have mine mixed at a local feed mill. There is no red millet or milo (sorghum), and no wheat or oats. At times I do included medium cracked corn, but that can attract starlings.
I also feed Niger seed (thistle) for finches, primarily gold finches. That requires a special feeder.
I have found no preference for the various premium suet cakes which are infused with fruit, seeds and other offerings. In fact, a big lump of suet from your local butcher inside an onion bag works just fine---but take it down in the spring, raw suet is not as stable as the rendered commercial product.
Black oil sunflower will appeal to a broad spectrum of birds and is high energy as well.
As for the bears, this attack took place only a few miles from our cottage.
Well it worked got my two first birds this afternoon on the new feeder. They were chickadees. There is hope.......................
I had a nice bird feeder at the canyon but not sure where it is now. Going to have to find it and put it at the house.
I have a big fat owl sitting on the fence behind my feeder, as I write this. I took some telephoto shots of the critter, and if I can figure a way to reduce them enough to paste on the site, I will publish its image.
Well I am happy to report that birds have found my feeders and found them they have. They have devoured over 8 pounds of mixed feed and 8 pounds of black oily sunflower seeds all in the last week. I did not expect that much activity. If I keep up this pace I am going to have to find a cheaper place to buy the feed.
