WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the Trump administration’s decision to cancel a program that provided legal protections and work authorizations to undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.

The court, in a 5-4 opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts, said the administration acted arbitrarily when it moved to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, failing to offer an adequate explanation for doing so.

The ruling hands President Trump one of the biggest legal defeats of his presidency, and in the middle of an election year in which immigration is again a top political topic. The decision effectively provides relief to more than 600,000 DACA recipients, often referred to as Dreamers, who have been in limbo since Mr. Trump in 2017 decided to wind down the program.

The court said the Trump administration didn’t follow the legal requirements for transparency and accountability in making federal policy.

I don't see it as such a big deal. The court ruled against Trump because the proper procedures were not followed. Chief Justice Roberts said Trump was free to try again. I would guess that means there is nothing to stop Trump from canceling the program as long as he follows the proper procedures. That shouldn't be such a big step.

I agree---but playing by the rules isn't in trump's scope---and there is the big deal :shrug:

The inconsistent part is that Justice Roberts has been hyper technical in reaching his ruling on Obamacare and now DACA and just opposite in his concurrence in the LBGTQRXYZ ruling yesterday stretching and bending the clear words and meaning of the legislature which passed it. Roberts has clearly become a community action judge willing to reach a decision about where he wants to go and then writing to justify it.

He’s bleeding right now from “death by a thousand cuts” just like he was his first run. It will make his next “surprise” victory even more fun. The screams will be incredible.

This comes as Trump is low in the polls. But, rather than trying to understand why Biden is ahead, he's angry and snarling.
