Funny you brought this up. Was having lunch with a buddy on Sunday and we made plans for a trip to Rosarita to get in a few sets.

Just that picture of running in front of that wave, brings on a considerable pucker factor for me :bleh:

Definitely a back crushing amount of weight coming down on you. I'm too afraid of drowning to ride big waves.

I tried SCUBA many years ago and just could not get comfortable. Not for me.

Scuba didn't work for me either---I could not get my ears to clear so any depth at all and I was in pain.

I felt too claustrophobic.... Could not get back on the boat soon enough.

No problem with getting out of a plane at 12K but 10' deep in the ocean not happening. I'm sure the whole food chain aspect does not help :)

Scuba was my favorite recreation along with skiing, when I was younger. I miss both.
I never could get the hang of boarding, but the waves in the Gulf where I tried it were probably too piddling to catch a ride.

Btw, that Porteguese site has many films and videos taken there by its famous lighthouse. I believe the world record wave ever ridden there is on film and was thought to be about 125' high.

And to the question of "why are the waves so big at Nazare?" The answer of which has been gnawing at me for two days and I finally gave in.

I loved Scuba diving, and the highlight of that was diving on the USS Oriskany 20 miles off the coast of Pensacola. Unfortunately, since my bypass, my Cardiologist says no more.

I was not much of a surfer I preferred bodysurfing off Zuma Beach in Malibu. At 15 I got my NAUI Diver Card. I missed a lot of high school classes going diving. I ended up as a NAUI Assistant Instructor. I have over 5000 dives under my belt. The Channel Islands off Southern Calif are my favorites followed by 3 beach dive spots off Northern Malibu. Excellent Spearfishing for Calico Bass, Hailbut and California Sheepshead (they go up to 40 pounds). Photo: after a morning of Diving South Rock 3 miles offshore from the Santa Cruz Harbor. Top of the granite reef is in 70' of water and the bottom is at 120' you have a maximum bottom time of 20 minutes tons of ledges and caves. unfortunately it is also known great white shark habitat. Very spooky place to dive.
