Lost an Injector

I was a couple of hundred miles North of home searching for a farm to buy when the check engine light came on. I had towed the RV up and decided to take the truck to Ford since I had no idea what the problem was and I didn't want to be stuck on the side of the road on the way home towing the 5th wheel. I called Tyler Ford and explained my problem. The service guy said it wasn't a problem, just bring it in tomorrow at 8:00 am. Did that and hadn't been gone long enough to get back to the RV park when he called me and said the #4 injector was shorted out. I asked how long to fix it and he said I whould have it back the same afternoon.

I can't say enough about how Tyler Ford treated me and fixed the problem. They will definately get my business when it comes time for a new vehicle. Even if I still live here.

As for the farm, I really liked the land, but the house was a POS. So, the hunt continues.

That must be a new one...The Ford dealer was downtown when I lived there...Of course so was everything else...:geezer:...Ben

Here's the first house I bought in Tyler...A duplex, I lived in half and rented out the other half...Somebody fixed it up nice since I owned it...Apparently they installed central air...I had window units...The front doors look the same...The house was built in 1915...I paid $11,900 for it in 1971 and took out a 30 year GI loan...:geezer:...Ben

“...said the #4 injector was shorted out...” That’s a new one on me and doesn’t trigger any picture in my mind about such a problem. :shrug:

After the hail storm did a number to my truck, I went for a estimate and discovered the sun roof was not working correct. Got it closed part way but not sealed and with all the rain that was not going to work. Stopped by Wolf Ford in Ogallala, NE and the service writer came out and then went back to get a tech. They worked with it to get it all the way closed. Asked what I owed, nothing. Gota love small towns.

Something I learned the hard way starting with my "99, the sunroof really doesn't "seal" the water out. The water is channeled down through the A Pillars and drains from a hole hidden by the door. That drain gets clogged every so often water leaks inside the cab. The easiest way to fix it is using compressed air.

The same thing happens with Dodge rear sliding windows...It pays to poke out the two drain holes in the bottom channel occasionally...:poke:...Ben

Other than the check engine did it make it run rough?

I kind of thought maybe it was just a tad rough, but it was so slight it could have been my imagination.

The reason I asked is that I lost an injector in my 97 7.3 and I thought the motor was going to come apart.

My 2.8 Duramax did come apart because of a bad injector - so, apparently, it can happen. I'm not clear on how the destruction works, all I can do is parrot what the Chevy dealer says bombed my engine.

Since they have too open it up to replace one have them do all four on that side. It's only a couple of hundred more in parts

Part of the problem is we never really know what the problem is unless we have a code reader that gives the same codes as what the dealer uses. I do have a old, cheap code reader that I used about a month before the Tyler trip. It that time, the CEL came on and I decided to try my old code reader. I forget now what the code was and what it was supposed to mean but I think it had something to do with fueling. I took it to my local Ford dealer who told me their diagnostics gave them a different problem than what I found. Ok, so on that trip they said it was the DEF sender, reservoir, and pump. A total of $1,908. Then the injector in Tyler which actually was a fuel problem makes me wonder about the first trip to the local dealer.

Are newer code readers better than one that is about 10 years old? Shouldn't all readers see the same code?

Besides being able to pull the codes, you still need to be able to interpret them.:shrug: The first time my check engine light came on in the rain, I took it to the dealership. The code was some 3 or 4 digit number that I think said something about some heavy metal or other periodic table element. The printout was several pages long and had lots of numbers and big words. The tech patiently explained that is was related to the air fuel ratio being out of whack because of a dirty air filter. :rolleyes: $276 for that lesson.

Btw, it doesnt matter if the filter is clean or not the check engine light comes on in the rain. I can't afford to learn why.

When I lost an injector on my 94 the truck ran fine but it was pouring diesel out of the block where the injector screws in. Like the fuel was just following the threads up and out. I stopped on the way home and got a new injector for $36.00 and installed it when I got home, not an easy task since the injector came out in two pieces with the bottom piece locked into place.
