I'm not proposing this, just curious on the groups opinion of the idea.
You have to have a license to operate a motor vehicle and if you screw up you lose the license and can't drive.
Why not require anyone that want to purchase ammo be licensed? Obviously you would be required to take firearm training in order to get the license and probably an age restriction as well.
My first negative thought is that it would create a ammo black market.
Thoughts / opinions???
The only reason you "need" a driver's license is to identify you to those in authority, and to create revenue for the government...You could drive just as well now whether you are licensed or not...I can shoot just as straight now as I ever could, and I've never had an ammo buyer's license...I carried a concealed gun on me for many years before I was licensed to do so...Now I do so with the blessing of the government, and I have not seen a difference...:shrug:...Ben
The Constitution tells me that I am entitled as a right to arm myself. You are not armed if your gun is empty.
Nowhere in the Constitution does it say I have a right to drive on public streets.
With that said, I would have no objection to a law/regulation requiring all bullets to be marked with a code to identify and track them.
With that said, how much of your own money would you be willing to contribute to the cost of implementing such a law?...:nuts:...BenQuote:

No one would deny that spent brass and bullets marked in code by manufacturers to trace ownership would be very helpful in solving numerous crimes. These coding systems have been proposed for many years and seem entirely plausible to me and others. Joe, it would not be a "minimal" increase in costs. There is a supply chain starting at the bullet manufacturer, and the casing manufacturer who both would be required to document where every bullet and case go. Then, the ammunition manufacturer who purchases the bullets and casings would be required to document where every assembled cartridge goes, supposedly to a wholesaler who, you guessed it, will have to document where every cartridge goes. Finally, the retailer will have to document where every cartridge goes, supposedly to the end user, but maybe not. I have gifted and received ammunition before, so then, whoever gives away or sells aftermarket ammunition will have to document where each individual cartridge goes.
Then, someone, maybe the ATF would have to collect all of these records and enter them into a colossal database for Andy Griffith, who has nothing else to do, to search when someone shoots a hole in a "No Littering" sign on a dirt road 12 miles outside of town. (and no, I do not think anyone should be shooting at road signs)
I can't begin to imagine how much all of this would cost just to buy a five dollar box of .22 cartridges that only cost about twenty cents when I first started shooting.
Is that really where we want to go? It would do nothing to prevent shootings because these fools want to make a name for themselves. They don't expect to survive. Dying is part of the misconstrued glory they are seeking.

Are you saying that each box of ammo would have an identifying code ?. Then that code would be assigned to the person that bought the ammo and sent to the Govt. Have you even considered the number of boxes of ammo that are sold each day ?. There is NO WAY an individual code could be put on the ammo.
Additionally, if the markings on the bullet , the firing pin mark and the scratches on the case can be matched [ thank you to all my TV police shows } why is it pessary to stamp the boxes and bullets ?.
You could plausibly put me out of the legal firearm business if you made me get liability insurance. As soon as the insurers get their arms around health care im sure congress will invite them to destroy the self defense industry. Hide and watch
Btw, I suspect that taxpayers are the biggest consumers of bullets and brass. Military surplus is a big supplier of components.
