When a Horologist asks you the time...

...they simply want to see what type of watch you wear.

Yeah, I'm a Horologist. It took me some years to recognize the syndrome. My wife pointed out my incessant need to accurately track time when I bought my first auto-winder. The soothing sounds of their motions have become somewhat of a sleep aid. And, helpfully, they keep my watches wound even when I'm away from home on trips. If any of you, my friends, are in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas and need a watch worked on, I'm your guy. I now have all the watch tools I need. Fortunately, they're so small they take up very little space.

Sadly, the new generation is not "into" watches. For, they carry their cell phones with them, that display the time. Fortunately, my Nephew (the doctor) is into automatic watches as well. We enjoy showing our collection to each other and discussing the merits/shortfalls of the same.

I don't think I've ever owned a watch....

My old wrist watch is in need of yet another rebuild...Since its last overhaul about 8 years ago, the little pushbuttons for the chronometer functions have both come off (I found one and saved it), and it seems to gain a minute every couple of days...The guy I went to here has since retired, and the OEM rep in Houston wants me to bring it in so they can send it to the factory...I don't know if I would live long enough to get it back, so I continue to wear it...

Sadly I have no current plans for a trip out west...:wah:...Ben

I haven't worn a watch in at least the last 40-50 years. I hate metal stuff hanging off my body. I do have a 25 year watch the county gave me but I've never worn it.

Same here. Got some fancy Swiss something or other when I retired. Haven't worn a watch a single day since.

I can’t stand it when I forget my watch. Mine are always relatively cheap “railroad” watches with clear Arabic numerals on a white face for easy and quick reading. Current one is a Swiss Army brand. I also use a velcro-closing strap so it fits just right - not too tight, not too loose. Very utilitarian. I gave my fancy gold Omega dive watch to my grandson, but I doubt he wears it much, as Hunter says about the young generations. I was always afraid to jump in salt water with it anyway. Haven’t had an auto-winder in decades though.

Thanks, Hunter...I bought it new 53 years ago...That was a couple of years before they became the official astronaut's watch and went to the moon...The cheapest new one I priced today was about $4K, and the new ones don't have the Caliber 321 movement mine does...I might hang on to it for a while...You probably don't want to know what I paid for it in 1967; I hate to hear grown men cry...:wah:...Ben

Will someone explain to me what that tachymetre thingie on the watch is used to do?

I have a Rolex GMT Master---sitting in the drawer. It need work and I took it back to Rolex in Switzerland to have them do the repairs---I did not have the original documentation with me and they told me that if I left it they would have to send it back with tariffs that apply to new ones. I took it with me and planned to return with the documentation---but somehow I never did that. I bought that watch in 1964 in Hong Kong. I guess I need to get it taken care of so that the kids can realize a higher value at the auction :dunnon:

I do currently wear a watch, it is a MB logo watch that I was given when I bought the S Class. It is not flashy so the only people that recognize it are other MB owners.

It gives an average speed over a measured distance (mile, kilometer, centocubit, whatever)...Push the button at the start of the measured distance, push again when you reach the terminus, then read your speed directly from the number indicated by the chronometer hand...As an example if Captain Kirk pushed the button at the beginning of a lightyear post on the spatial turnpike and again at the next one, if the hand pointed at 350 the Enterprise would have been moving at 350 lightyears per hour...:zoom:...Ben

I forgot to include a gift from my wife :o: It is a Gucci, similar to the one below but even more spartan. The entire face is black, without any design as shown here and without the gold fly (who ever thought that up?) It has a small diamond (?) inset at 12 o'clock. I only wear it when I have to dress up and try to be nice :shrug:

I think I still have one of those I bought in NYC outside Grand Central. I think I paid around $18 for it. Needs some work like your Rolex.

Gucci, not unlike Rolex, has been dogged by counterfeits---some of which are quiet respectable. I can't tell you that my wife didn't stop at the same corner---but since she didn't tell me that, I am not one to bring it up! Real or counterfeit, it is a handsome watch in it's very spartan elegance.

Every counterfeit Rolex I have seen, no matter how perfect they look, give themselves away as soon as I pick them up, the finish is not even close. Pleasantly rounded edges are left too sharp on the counterfeits.

Rolexes are way too clunky on my delicate arm.
No one very used “elegant” and Rolex in the same sentence, and you are perhaps a first to use it even in the same paragraph.

Guilty as charged. I was about 4 and woke up, got dressed, and went outside in Cameron Park California. At some point, one of my friends pointed out that I had no pants on. I had a shirt on and "tight whiteys" - but nothing else. I also rarely wore shoes as a kid. I have no problem with all of this - it's one of the funnier things from my youth I remember.

My dad loved a good watch and passed that on to me he liked the ponies more though. He had a couple of nice watches here and there but never anything like a rolex. Bulova was more his speed I haven't wore a watch in ten years but I still look at my wrist some times. I'm working on getting another but I don't want it to be a Casio :uhuh: So it will be a little while.:dunno:

I have my dads Bulova. I drug it out a few years back and wore it to one of our meetings in the Bulova building in Queens where we moved our new HQ.

My generation is big watch people. A Rolex to them is a slim profile. They wouldn't look twice at a Patek Philippe.

My favorite watch is one my dad had that I think my mom still has. Its a Spiro Agnew watch that looks like a mickey mouse watch. Thats fashion.:blind:

Used to wear a fake Rolex (like Dave’s but with a black betzel ).. bought on Canal Street in New York.. worked like a real one.. except.. the black paint scratched off of the betzel and the crown wore down to brass .. and took a while to keep the band fastened.. pins were not strong enough..

When I retired I was given a beautiful high $$$ Sieko .. stopped wearing it..

Went “nature boy” (like Bo)..

Bought a $9.00 pocket watch to take on a cruise ship (no phone)..

On edit.. sold the fake Rolex at a yard sale.. for what I paid fore it.. also.. compared a real Rolex and my fake using a jeweller eyepiece.. the real Rolex face looked like Numbers/letters were cut out with a razor.. the fake looked like they were applied with a paint roller.. was pretty funny thinking how someone could be fooled by my fake.. but it kept excellent time and had the little Rolex shake on the second hand..

The elegant adjective was for the Gucci---certainly not the Rolex----the Rolex is a male statement :getdown:

BTW---while my Rolex is "cluncky" to the extreme, they do make less "expressive" models.

Curt mentioned Patek Philippe. They are ongoing customers of ours. We recently finished their new show room/office in mid-town and while I probably should be wearing one of their watches I have no driving need to return that much profit!

Years ago when the lake would go down in the winter I would walk the shoreline looking for Indian relics. One day I noticed something odd and it turned out to be a Timex watch buried in the mud. It no doubt had fell off of a fisherman's arm when the water was up. I took it home and cleaned it up good. The time was accurate except one hour behind due to the time change. No telling how long it was down there. I still wear it from time to time. If I were to buy a watch these days I would probably buy one of the fancy Casio units that track the weather altitude and all that kind of stuff.

No..no.. was just kidding.. my knock off was known to all as my Rolodex..

It all came about after I was criticized by out teams sales manager after buying a knock off Gucci watch with half a dozen changeable colored betzel for my 3rd grade daughter to play with..

I would flaunt and quote the Rolodex in the office..

At some point in time, and I think I was back in the US by that time, I broke the band. Replacing a band is not as simple as you might think and so there was an interval of time where I was without my watch.

To bridge the gap I bought a Seiko electric---and that was a big mistake. I am anal--even for an engineer, and one of the reasons I bought the Rolex was to have a watch that kept perfect time---which it did---almost---but not perfect. The damn Japanese Seiko did:AHHH: I ended up putting the Rolex in the drawer when it came back and continued wearing the Seiko :shrug:

Yep, wearing different watches much of the time, you eventually learn which ones you can count on and which ones you cannot. As mentioned by Dave, this is often is not connected to status or price.

Dave mentioning Seiko reminded me that I'm had to of them, I gave my first one to my son and the second was my ex-wife's husband. It looks brand spanking new but needs a battery. I hope that's all it is anyway. whoops, the ex-husbands is a fossil and there's a brand new Nautica. I could have sworn there was a Seiko. I'm drawing a blank imagine that.:maybe:

I guess it is not odd that the geezers around here have not mentioned owning or even wanting an Apple Watch or one of the Android synching ones. Anyone have one or too unimpressed to mention it?

I'm still getting over the shock of actually owning an Apple phone...Maybe after the Omega factory runs out of parts for my watch, I'll try one of those new-fangled ones...But not likely before...:geezer:...Ben
